Indigenous-led model sees a reduction in Indigenous infants being removed by child services

Women who receive support through an Indigenous-led model of maternity care are three times less likely to have Indigenous newborn children removed by child protection services, new research has shown. It comes in the wake of a scathing Productivity Commission report which threw a spotlight on the failure by successive governments to reduce the issues of out-of-home care for Indigenous children.

QAIHC and ANU lead tobacco consumption consultation in Queensland

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Queensland have voiced their opinions on tobacco consumption and access by their peoples.

QAIHC, in partnership with Australian National University’s National Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Wellbeing Research have conducted a series of consultation sessions throughout the state to determine community usage and gather feedback on measures to discourage smoking and tobacco use.

MyMedicare is an Australian Government initiative that allows patients to enrol with one primary care practice and to nominate a preferred GP at that practice. The registration to MyMedicare is voluntary for patients, practices and primary care providers. The intention of MyMedicare is to, over time, support a range of reforms to improve access to primary care and support practice viability.

Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners (AHPs) are essential members of the Australian healthcare system, providing culturally sensitive and accessible healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to upskill AHWs to become AHPs. AHPs are registered health practitioners with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia, qualified to provide a wider range of healthcare services, including clinical services like immunisations and wound care.

QAIHC Principal Research Advisor, Greg Pratt, was a speaker at the American Society of Human Genetics’ Annual Meeting in Washington DC in November; part of an Australian contingent presenting about exciting work being led by a group of Aboriginal researchers in Australia that promises to support equitable access to genetic healthcare for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
